Getting Down to "Biz Ba$ics"

It’s been more than a year of dreaming, praying, and planning, but on October 7 it all became reality when 16 Hayward Middle School students arrived at Southgate Baptist Church ready to learn how to start and run a business.
It all started with a desire to give academic and life skill support to the many middle school students attending Southgate and SCYM’s Monday night Young Life club (now Club 517). Living on Springfield’s south side, economic opportunity can seem distant, yet many teens have the ideas and drive to make a better life for themselves.
With funding and support from the Nehemiah Foundation and Southgate, and a partnership with Cedarville University’s business department and student entrepreneurship club, Biz Ba$ics was born! Each Monday after school, students from ENACTUS, Cedarville’s entrepreneurship club, help Biz Ba$ics kids learn about business in preparation to start and run their own business.
Thirty-one Hayward 7th graders applied to be part of the program.

Our young entrepreneurs have contracted with a local baker, Susan’s Country Cupboard, to develop and sell unique treats for Thanksgiving. Stay tuned for a post with all the details (they are officially pricing everything today)! They’ll be selling from October 28 to November 11, with product pick-up November 22-24.

Through your support of SCYM you are helping to ignite dreams and put young people on a path to fulfill them!
