Here at SCYM we are resorting to worn-out gimmicks to get people involved this fall, and since you took the bait and clicked, we are actually going to share this trick with you. No celebrity name-dropping, no strange fat-burning fruit, no easy ways to make money from home.
The one weird trick to changing lives is this:
That’s it. It doesn’t matter how big your personality is, or how perfect your hair, or whether you have the right words in every situation. We’ve been doing this for a while, and we can tell you with certainty that what matters to a kid, and what leaves the most lasting impact, is someone who shows up consistently with the love of Jesus in their heart.
Oh, there are all kinds of roles you can have, like helping coach middle school girls through their friendships or healthy habits. Or reading with a small group of elementary school kids, or playing a board game together. Or even helping middle schoolers learn about business. But no matter how good you are at any of these things, the fact of the matter is, 90% of what we do is showing up.
You would not believe the impact that a volunteer who shows up consistently to love kids can have! (Here is a recent story that has moved us about how important our time with these kids is.)
So this fall, if you’d like to take the bait, we’ve got some opportunities for you or anyone you know who has an hour or two to give every week.
GirlPower Afterschool Program helps middle school girls develop healthy habits on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 4:00-6:00 starting September 22. There’s an interest meeting for all volunteers on Wed., September 10 at 6:00pm in Post 95 (Wittenberg student lounge), and a training on Wed., September 17 at 6:00pm in the Shouvlin center at Wittenberg (room TBA, but the group won’t be hard to find.)
STARS Afterschool Program is a place for elementary school children to practice reading, eat together, and hear about God’s love for them on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at High Street Nazarene and Westside Christian Community from 3:15-5:30 starting September 22. High Street’s Volunteer Ramp-Up Day is Monday, September 15 at 4:00 (1625 E. High St., Springfield). Westside’s Volunteer Ramp-Up Day is Tuesday, September 16 at 4:00 (1335 Maiden Lane, Springfield).
And Biz Ba$ics is an afterschool entrepreneurship program for Hayward Middle School students at Southgate Baptist Church on Mondays from 4:00-6:30 starting September 29. Contact Leah Terrell at 776-8644 or email@example.com to get more info and find out about volunteer training.
If you would like to be involved but can’t be there every week, let us know! We have some roles like food prep and special activity roles that don’t require an every week but are still important. You can email us at SCYMinistries@gmail.com, or give us a call at 937-325-6183.
Change a life this school year! No gimmicks, no hidden fees, no tricks. Just show up.
